Don’t ask what the network can do for you, ask what the network requires of me to help make it better. Help to build a better network.

November 3rd, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you,

Over the years the network has been an avenue of resources and support and a channel in the right directions and connectivity to/with the needed people, processes and technology for all. During this time we have helped people across all industries, verticals, markets, segments and people all in the name of elevating the levels of education, awareness and visibility of and about Technology and IT Security through sales, services and support.

Whether it is by providing employment opportunities, job placement, funding opportunities, technical support/resources, networking, event hosting and collaboration, we have been there as best as we can, in all that we can. Now the network embarks on its final stages of convergence and integrating all these services, values, resources and opportunities into a new operational model, a social network, the support wanes heavily. The same people that we have been there for, connected with, shared resources or positioned in employment opportunities with were reached out to with a call for support of the new network initiative and it has received a very weak and somewhat daunting and disregard feedback and response.

Some people who have not yet answered to the call are still seeking support and assistance in various ways. They still look to the network for guidance, collaboration and support but do not see the piece where they fit into the mix and help to build on things by joining and being an active member. Yet, unchecked, the network must still provide the quality of services and support as it does by its very existence as we stand by our motto,

We are Security – your Security – our Security – IT Security. Our Security is Safe and Secure.

How do we expect to build on this without the support of the people and the values they bring to the network?

The network was built as a converged resource of everything about us, what we do, how we work, the people we associate, communicate and work with and the vendors, manufacturers and developers that we sell, service and support their products and solutions. We needed a central resource that would bring everyone and everything together and allow group discussions, networking, collaborating, exclusive promotions and the ability to grow together. While the network is ever changing and enhancing itself to be all that it can be and more, the needs from our members is also growing and so to create the perfect balance, the network needs the active support of its members and people.

So the next time you think about something you need from the network, ask yourself,

What am I able to do for the network and what would the network require of me to help make it better?

Let’s all work together for the betterment of this valuable resource so that we call can benefit from it in as many ways as possible. While you will forward jokes and other non trivial things to your peers, family and friends, how about sending them an invite so they too can come in and join in the initiative.

I am the network and the network is me. I am an extension of the resources and value it brings and so I must conduct and present myself accordingly.

Thank you and have a great day,

IT Security Education and Awareness must go beyond sales and financial gains, more education, awareness and training needed on levels

November 3rd, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

The current state of our economic and global interconnectivity infrastructure relies heavily and in some cases solely on the adoption, use and services of technology today and for tomorrow. More and more we’re seeing the integration and use of technology in the home, school, places of learning and other institutions that confirms that our decency on these things are far from going away or over. Yet, unchecked, we’re still in a money making and financial gains mode when it comes to providing the education, awareness, knowledge of the convergence of technology and the World Wide Web for us as a people.

The ridiculous notion of our infrastructure being secured by over government or independent entities that limit partnerships and associations to only high levels, is a sure sign of the failure of the systems of security for tomorrow. Until and unless we unite in this fight against these issues and the growing trends by which they are being introduced, we will always be vulnerable by our weakest, untrained and not knowledgeable links (citizens, business, educators, advisors, technologists), . We are vulnerable through the process of omission, omitting those we think are not a critical part of the infrastructure or the need to help in securing it. The high costs of securing our infrastructure does not include user education and general awareness as a proactive move. It is only when something happens and the issues/problems are of a great magnitude/impact that we see the levels of attention and focus being put to it, then comes the irritating comments of if we had known or if we had acted sooner.

What will it take for us to give the needed attention and focus to these issues before they become problems?
When and where will we see the integration and coordination of all levels of society getting involved in this initiative?
Who can speak on all levels for all levels?

These are different times, different types of warfare, different types of attacks with more sophistication, more widespread impact and yet, still, we’re limiting the resources needed to endorse, support and finance these educational and awareness needs. We are falling behind in the fight to keep up with the demand of technology products and solutions because the hardware vendors mission to bring us the latest and greatest products with more feature rich functions, speed, storage and settings. This is one fight that by its very simplicity, involves our youths/children and those of early learning without even going outside their boundaries. The threats are looking for us, looking for vulnerabilities in our systems, looking for our private and personal information, looking for anything it can on and about us and our businesses, where we work and how we live.

Will you leave yourself vulnerable because you didn’t take the time to learn more about them or practice safe computing?
How do we address this on a global scale where the minds and concerns of our youths are addressed in regards to technology, privacy and securing them?
Who educates the educators and provides them with the needed resources to speak to the technology advancements being seen and felt in our society today within the classrooms?

Our youths are educating the educators, the parents and the more senior members of our society. While the adults and seniors are busy living their day to day lives, the youths have all this extra time on their hands to play with that makes that the perfect educational resource for tomorrow. Educating them about the internet and how technology integrates and affects our daily lives today and tomorrow will help them to be better netizens. There are too many unknowns into what is the most sophisticated and interconnected network every built and running.

We are too controlling over our youths without the right focus on these things. It is not about taking away the access or resources of the internet, it is about educating them more on its values, proper use and how to manage their online presence and identity. Social Networks, Social Media, personal and professional messaging ethic, etiquette, general internet usage and the Threats Landscape are all critical topics that should be integrated into our school systems curriculum today to allow these kinds of thoughts from an early age and stage of development. More funding and resources should be put into programs, groups, organizations that focus on these critical resources training for tomorrow. Our lower school educational systems are lacking the integration of technology, privacy, internet usage and protection training that suits our youths today. Youths are exposed and have access to these internet resources at home without proper education and awareness as to how to use and manage them until something happens and a life is taken  or at stake and further investigation reveals that he/she had a secret life online that was very troubled and now this.

This is where our educational institutions should be filling in the gap and providing the additional focus and attention on these things. Engaging local subject matter experts, vendors, developers and other technology leaders to come in and give real world experience and open discussion is a critical need for our youths. Let us engage the youths in open dialog on and about technology, IT Security, privacy and other concerns they may have. Let us open up those channels of communications so they can be better served and ready for the superhighway ride ahead.

Let us not waste time in helping to foster the needed understanding, education and awareness needed for our youths as they have and are actively engaged in using them every day. What better way to put this knowledge craving to use than by helping them along the way.

IT Security is a people problem, not an industry one. We are all at risk.

Thank you and have a great day,

Windows 7 recommendations/suggestions from TITSSN and our social network support and services group

October 22nd, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you,

So it is here, finally and it is simply awesome. I must say that I am truly impressed by it and it couldn’t have come at a better time we are getting into the holiday seasons. There are so many promotions, ads and goodies floating round about the OS that it will become inundating to those who are very knowledgeable or aware of it and I can see an increase in fake copies, scams and other misleading issues.

So, let’s take a serious early look at this so that you can be prepared to deal with this new OS because I know you want it.

  • Be sure to understand that you will lose settings and configuration if upgrading. You most likely have a system with an OS installed already so you have one of two choices. You either upgrade what you have to Win7 or you do a clean install which means wiping everything and having a brand new pristine install. The latter of course will require some technical knowledge to accomplish but will give a much cleaner, smoother and better experience after completion.
  • Immediately after installing/upgrading to Windows 7, go to the Microsoft Updates site and grab all the high, critical and software updates. This must be done before doing anything else. Applying any new updates and patches is critical to the baseline security of the OS.
  • Immediately after patching, check with your anti-virus vendor for support of Windows 7. You must not run the OS without proper anti-virus and anti-malware protection. Be sure the product says supports Windows 7 or you may run into problems or have some limitations. Remember that having the anti-virus solution isn’t everything, proper configuration of scheduling, scanning and remediation is also critical. This will require some technical knowledge of the solution and is worth consulting with someone on the technical side. This could be a friend, relative or someone you may know who is an IT professional.
  • Be sure to check that you have enough system resources to support the OS. A good video card with 256MB of RAM minimum, 1GB of RAM and 40GB or hard drive space. Many times users install an OS and complain about performance issues and this is because they don’t have enough resources to manage or run it. Check your resources, this is very important to the functioning and operations of the OS and system.
  • Check in with your application developers for updated versions that support Windows 7. Whatever applications you’re running, check the developer for support/compatibility. This should be done prior to even doing the install/upgrade as once done you can’t go back. If running current or older versions of applications, check to make sure you’re running the latest build/version that addresses any open security issues.
  • Check in with your hardware vendors for updates firmware, drivers and other fixes for the hardware inside your PC.

Please stay away from free online offers of anti-virus and/or other security related products from unknown or untrusted sources as we’re seeing an increase in the availability of fake/rogue solutions being offered that seriously messes things up. Consult with a security advisor before making any decision to purchase security software for your Windows 7 build.

Now that you have this lovely new OS and is dying to start playing around with it, it would be prudent to take a look at the new features as there are quite a few and will take some learning and getting used to. The wording and placement of some options have changed. The most critical part to the successful user experience of security of this new system relies solely on your ability to use it and how educated and aware you are of the threats landscape today. Not because you have anti-virus/anti-malware solution installed doesn’t mean you will not be exposed or possibly infected unless you do your due diligence and best practices for safe browsing and messaging. Always keep in mind that you are the first line of attack and defense for your system(s) and it is how you choose to protect and defend it will lead to the success or failure.

We have opened our social network Microsoft Windows 7/Win7 Technical Support and Services Group to help with the adoption and security of the OS. Our IT Professionals will be happy to help.

We will continue to share best practices and guidelines as the new OS makes its way into mainstream society. If you’re deciding to go to this OS we advise an open dialog with someone on it before proceeding so the mentioned items can be properly explained and understood.

Thank you and have a great day,

TITSSN is taking our IT Security educational and awareness programs to new heights/levels. Adding ThreatsMix, The IT SecuriCity and Securious to our network.

October 10th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you,

We are never failing when it comes to the ingenuity, resources, value and professionalism and so we are adding three new segments to the network.

ThreatsMix – leveling the IT Security Threats Landscape for everyone to see where and how they fix into the matrix, the things that affects them, how it affects them and how they can be more protective and secure in today’s world of technology. ThreatsMix will provide a holistic look at providing better education and awareness about the threats and what is active in the wild while you’re actively under direct impact from them.

Where do you stand in the mix, are you  properly secured and are you ready for the next level?

The IT SecuriCity (Security City) is a city built by IT Security professionals, vendors enthusiast and advisors for people to come in and peruse the resources and values that we have to offer. This city will house the latest, greatest and most organized environment of technical and professional technology and IT Security resources as we go forward. Visit our city and check out the sights, views and resources that will be available.

Securious, the word speaks for itself as we have and will always take IT Security very serious and as such will be providing the highest levels of value and resources for all. This is Securious.

More details to come as we build on integrating these into our social network home.

Thank you and have a great day,

What better way to communicate than with an all-in-one audio, video and text package. Our social network provides these resources to all members

October 7th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you,

As an educational, training, services, support and advisory organization, we have always added a more personal and face-to-face element to our work and initiatives and we don’t see why our new home shouldn’t be the same. Communication is a critical part of our work and so we have made sure that we included the needed resources to offer these services within our network. The audio, video and text messaging services offer a new level of communication for our members to collaborate and address anything at anytime. No matter where you are, one can converse on any level needed with their friends, clients and associates.

Whether you’re networking with a member who is a client, customer, friend or someone new, you can extend the value of communicating through these additional resources with just the click of a button and still be active within the network. Personally I like seeing who I am talking/typing to/with and so I have a very nice high end webcam and microphone that I use for the audio and video pieces. This way you can have the visual effects and experience the digital qualities as well. This is integrated with the audio module which allows simultaneous audio and video collaboration for individuals or groups of people.

As we continue to grow and build on this great network, we will continue to enhance the value, resources and availability of additional collaboration resources for our members. Adding that personal touch to the network will allow more value to our members in building on the networking and collaboration. We are working on some new enhancements that will allow live streaming of our meetings, events, online presentations and training sessions and that will be an additional value for all.

So stay tuned, stay secure and be aware of these resources and the development of this great network of education, awareness, training and collaboration. We look forward to your input, feedback and support.

Thank you and have a great day,

New alliance with Symantec brings much needed resources to TITSSN for training on their Endpoint Security, Altiris and Backup products.

October 2nd, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day,

I attended a private workshop/forum with Symantec a few weeks ago to address some of the issues we partners face in delivering on their products and it was very valuable. I met some of the program managers, system engineers, business executives where we sat and had good conversation and discussions about their Endpoint Security, Altiris and Backup Exec solutions. When asked about the challenges I face in getting the products out, I expressed the dire need for having access to system engineers to be available at our monthly hands-on security workshops.

I was promised the needed help in having access to the system engineers for the upcoming workshops we will be having on the Endpoint Security and other anti-virus and anti-malware solutions.

I am working on the next anti-virus/malware workshop and will post the info shortly but I wanted to share this good news with you.

Many thanks to Mrs. Marlene Nelson-Zehner and Mr. Jason Fisher of Symantec for making all this happen for us. Thank you.

Thank you and have a great day,

HTC’s Touch Pro 2 is a much better device than the iPhone. I am truly impressed by it. Why wasn’t I this touched before :-(?

September 28th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Greetings my readers,

I can truly say that after spending the past two days hammering out the features, functionality and usability of the two devices side by side, I am much more confident, comfortable and relaxed with the HTC Touch Pro 2 than my iPhone (which I only have for testing and comparative reasons anyway) as a professional, music connoisseur and just being able to have it manage my day to day activities, planning and scheduling. As a person that lives religiously off his calendar, I must feel comfortable in the device I carry and its ability to keep me on track.

Once Microsoft opens up the app like store I’m sure this will push the usability and functionality levels even higher and I can’t wait. My only fears, and I do mean fear, is that the upcoming Windows Mobile v.6.5 may bring changes to this setup that may not work best for me and so I will be making a backup of my existing setup before upgrading to WinMo v.6.5.

So now I prepare for WinMo v.6.5 and I will complete my full review of the device on the existing WinMo v.6.1Professional and post it shortly. Until then, I’m just all over the touching.

Have a great day,

I’m just loving the new Symantec Endpoint Protection v.11.0.5 and its support or Windows 7

September 27th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Greetings,

I must say that Symantec is doing a great job with SEP and the new support for Windows 7 is making things so much sweeter. I’m just loving it and since i’m now running Windows 7 on 70% of my systems, i’d say that’s a good level of comfort for me.

I’m spending some quality time with SEP and Win7 today to ensure that my systems security is rock solid and I am covering all my bases. It is much lighter and doesn’t use as much system resources as the previous versions. Very nice improvements.

Have a great day in your neck of the woods.

We’re working on a referral program that will offer $25 to every member that brings 25 active users to the network.

This is to prove how serious we are about getting the values and information on and about IT Security out to the people as it is a people problem and we’re addressing it that way.

I have been touched by HTC’s Touch Pro2 from Sprint. Simply the best mobile device ever. Can’t get enough of it.

September 16th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you my fellow readers,

What can I say, of all the years I have been using mobile devices I must say that the new HTC Touch Pro2 is by far the sexiest, slickest and most feature rich device I have ever used. I put both hands up (not thumbs) to HTC on a job well done and the more I dive into the device is the more I’m loving it and seeing its full potentials. This device is changing the ways I see, use and feel about mobile devices and confirms my feelings that they will play a more significant part of our lives going forward.

Thank you HTC for a job well done and I hope this is just the beginning of a new and improved line of devices to come. I’m loving the high resolution on the BIG screen and the touch and feel on the device, features and settings. Loving the bigger buttons too, oh yea. Now I’m doing a comparison between the Touch Pro2 and the iPhone, hmm, very interesting :-) .

My full review will be released soon but until then, I’ll keep teasing you :-)

Just got my Sprint Touch Pro2 and it is SWEEET, loving it, hating the limited package though :-(

September 15th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Hi all,

This is by far the sweetest mobile device I have ever had, OMG, this is sweet. HTC has outdone themselves with this one. Surprisingly though, it is the first HTC device I’ve had that comes with such limited accessories. A huge disappointment since I’m very familiar with the company and the packaging of accessories. Not even a case for the device, how sad is that.

Well now I must configure it and start setting it up but I have to be up extra early in the morning (a few hours from now) to go to work so I’ll wait till later and report back.

It’s a bit bigger than the Touch Pro and that is with a bigger, brighter and slicker design and screen. Can’t have a big enough screen for sure. Already made a call to check out the quality and it is much better than the previous phones.

I do plan to do a full review for you guys so stay tuned and have a great night. I’m just loving this device :-)

Good night all. You can tell how excited I am right (laughing out loud).

Migrating some of TITSSN’s existing web resources into our social network

June 1st, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you,

Effective today, June 1st 2009, we will begin using our social network’s blogs board for the organizations main blogging. We will still maintain the http://titssn.net/blogs site for critical and important organization news, happenings and security alerts. Due to the integration of additional features and resources within the social network, using them will be very beneficial for us as we will now be able to better manage the integration of these features in one central location. You can view the blogs on the social network here http://titssn.org/browse_blogs.php.

We will be moving the main organization forum posts from our old board at http://theitsecuritysuite.net/forum/phpBB2 to the social network starting today. The main organization posts will now be copied into the social network until we phase out the old site.

All referencing links from our main websites, blogs and other areas will now point to the social network. This is in an effort to work within the social network and its resources as our new home.

We will also be removing some of the sub groups on LinkedIn and referencing them from our main group located here http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=44598. This will help to share the info of our network resources while still maintaining a strong presence on LinkedIn. A list of the affected groups will be posted shortly. The groups’ functionality within the social network will give us the same feature and resources and more for us to collaborate more effectively.

Mr. President, solving the IT Security issues requires collaboration at all levels, no exemptions

May 30th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you Mr. President,

It is good to see that you are taking a stance in the IT Security issues of today but the most fundamental problem we face is the concept that it is an industry or corporate problem. IT Security is a people problem and until we start seeing it that way our approach to the issues will always fail. The availability of information and resources to mitigate these issues needs to be centrally available and disseminated effectively across the board in an unbiased manner.

No man stands alone in this cyberwarfare, we must unify the effort to strengthen all links/angles as all are affected, no exceptions.

The problems of the technology space exist across all levels in personal, business and professional use. All are impacted by these issues and when a corporation is hacked and the data stolen, in most cases the end users are the ones that suffer because it is their personal info that ends up in the hands of the hackers or thieves.

I love the fact that you are a technology/gadget minded person as you’re aware of what they entail and how vulnerable we can be through them. I’m sure you would like to see these issues by more feature/resource rich securely and so we both share the same goals, security for all and across all levels.

How about helping us create better education and awareness initiatives like our ENGAGED. We need these levels of training, education, awareness and development at the lower school levels as well. Provide the funding needed to expand on the security users’ group communities and driving the availability of information and resources.

Let us work together on these initiatives and get over the power struggle issues.

We look forward to working with you and your administration sir.

Thank you and have a great day,

A special invitation to join TITSSN’s Technology / IT Security Social Network

May 15th, 2009 Brett A. Scudder No comments

Good day to you my members, friends, connections, clients, partners, associates, et al,

Today I am very excited to send you a very special invitation to join us in our new home for you to benefit from what is being provided for you, and to help build on the collaboration and networking resources we’re making available for all on and about technology and IT Security. Don’t think of this as “another network”, think of it as a better network with a more targeted focus on two critical areas of our future, IT/technology and securing them. We’ve taken some of the best features of LinkedIn, Facebook and Ning and integrated them into our own with more to come.

We have put a lot of work into it and will continue to do so in order to make it more valuable as we move forward.

I know this will be of great value for us all as we are all affected by the issues and there impacts and so we must build this great place of collaboration and networking about it. Please help to share this new resource and info.

About the network.

Our Technology / IT Security Social Network is a professional place where people come together to create a vibrant, resourceful, strategic and secure social atmosphere of networking, training, education, awareness and collaboration for, on and about technology and securing them.

We invite you to participate in the full functions and features of our network as we build on it to enhance its values and mission for the future. We ask that you share the word with your associates, friends, peers and everyone that is interested in the world of security and being more comfortable and secure in it. This network is specifically geared towards technology, IT Security and everything in and about it.

The focus of this social network is to build greater training, education, awareness and provide the guidance, advise, services and support needed to maintain the secure presence and stability of all infrastructures (homes, businesses (all sizes and types), schools, churches, etc) for all. We look forward to your participation in this effort as a professional, specialist, technologist, leader, contributor, reader, advisor or just a member wanting to learn more.

Please adhere to the policies and rules of the network so that all may find it a common professional place to collaborate in.

Please join us by signing up here http://titssn.org/signup.php
