Good day to you,

If you are a security vendor that provides solutions for mobile devices I am interested in talking with you about being a part of our MESS in February. Please feel free to contact me directly for further discussion.

Here is more information about the summit.

The Summit will be focusing on the proliferation of mobile devices (laptops, Tablet PCs, Pocket PCs, UMPCs, Smartphone’s, media players, mass storage devices and add-on cards) and the threats they present to the consumers/businesses and the data that resides on them. We will provide the products and solutions that will allow the management and control over these devices through the endpoints.

Live hands on demos will be available. There will be test/demo systems configured and setup to facilitate the effective use of the information and products being presented and demo’d. There will be mobile devices from the industry vendors such as HTC, Palm, Motorola, Google, Samsung and more.

We are all aware of how these devices can be used to steal data/information off the target system unbeknownst to the user.

The Summit will focus on 3 key areas of mobility and security.

1. The Devices – A look at the mobile devices on the market today.

a. Netbooks, Laptops, Tablet PCs, Mini PCs, UPMCs
b. Smartphone’s/Pocket PCs – HTC’s, Motorola’s, HP Smartphone’s, Samsung, Cell phones
c. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Nexus One
d. Media Players – iPod’s, MP3 players and more
e. Mass Storage Devices (USB Flash drives, Compact and SD cards, mobile phone memory sticks, and more)
f. Wireless capabilities – Infrared, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WiMax,
g. The Operating Systems – Windows Mobile, Symbian, Apple, Android

2. The Threats – A look at the threats that affects these devices and how they are targeted and attacked from internal and external sources.

a. Viruses/worms proliferation from devices to network to world.
b. Unauthorized connectivity to and from unscrupulous devices and sources (wired and wireless).
c. The use of these devices for storing critical business data and information.
d. Sharing data and information to and from the device through messaging and wireless connectivity.
e. The availability of over the air messaging and other communications tools and the problems they present.
f. Data loss/Theft of these devices and the business impact it presents.
g. Addressing the myths about over-the-air wiping of the device and why it is not effective today. The device is still a threat if lost.

3. The Protection – How to manage, protect and secure these devices from the threats.

a. How to manage the devices on and off the network.
b. How to protect and secure your endpoints from these unauthorized devices.
c. How to secure the devices against malicious codes (viruses, worms, Trojans, keyloggers, hackers) with viral protection.
d. How to secure the data/information residing on the devices local store and storage cards with data encryption.
e. How to secure the wireless connections of the device.
f. What to do in the event of a device loss or theft – the incident alert/response, damage control and alerting process.
g. How to make the over-the-air wiping feature effective and to mitigate the loss of data if device is lost.

Please feel free to share this request with any vendor that may find it of value.

Thank you and have a great day,

~Brett A. Scudder~

Good day to you,

Over the years we have been working with a number of security vendors, professionals and experts and have collaborated and networked with them on many occasions for various reasons. We are taking this partnership/alliance to another level and will be aligning interviews and some one-on-one time with them to talk about their business, jobs, roles and the ways in which they impact or are impacted by the technology infrastructure of today. This is now coming into play quite nicely and will be conducted through our social network.

This will allow us to get a sense of their feelings, input and directives from them or their companies so we can be better able to understand and relate to/with them.

We are aligning these interviews of which some will be in person and some over the wire/air but we will do the best we can to bring you the quality and value. We are looking forward to this and will be archiving the interviews here in our network.

Our network builds value and quality out of its partnership, membership and alliances and in so doing tries to find ways in which we can elevate the quality of life and exposure for all members. It is through the support of our partners, members, associates and friends we will continue to excel in all that we do and are about. We look forward to the continued support as we move forward.

Stay tuned and have a great day,

~Brett A. Scudder~

Good day to you,

Due to some infrastructure work that is being done at the Microsoft Briefing Center we have to find a new venue to host the summit. The expected time of availability was pushed back and so we must make this change now. As a result we will have to reschedule the event due to the need for a new venue and the time it will take to get that in place.

A new date and venue will be announced soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you and have a great day,

Good day to you,

Chicago has been one of the most challenging areas we’ve had to work with in getting a local chapter setup due to limited access and resources there for us. Over the past 18 months we’ve built some great trusted and resourceful relationships and fostered a sense of need in having our presence in the area to promote the education, training and awareness of technology and IT Security.

I am very excited to say that in so doing, we are much closer to launching a vibrant professional chapter in Chicago that will provide the vast extent of our initiatives there and we are very excited about it. Our working relationship with Microsoft adds a much needed compliment to this new chapter as we may start off by hosting the meetings at their local office of which more details will be provided shortly.

All being well, we anticipate a start date of November 2009 of which more specifics will be made available soon. Look for more updates to be posted soon.

Thank you and have a great day,

Good day to you,

It is always a challenge to drive the attention, traffic and visibility of technology and IT Security education, awareness and guidance to the masses as it isn’t one of those things they pay attention to until something happens or there is a need. As a Technology/IT Security leader for today and tomorrow, we, TITSSN, are always pushing for proactive approaches to getting the information, resources and value to the people so that we can stop, block and prevent successful attacks before they happen.

It is for this reason that we’re adding more value and incentives to our network to drive active membership on the site by giving a $50 USD gift certificate to every 100th new member. This will be monitored to ensure that the 100th member is actually a real person who does something on the site other than just signing up. We have put security measures in place to try and block all levels of spamming (posts, commenting, signup) in order to maintain the realness of our network and resources especially for these incentives. There will be other giveaways and incentives as we try to bring the value of the education and awareness to the global user base of people.

There is more to come as we look into the deliverables of our network and resources. A new partnership is in the works with a very popular publishing provider to offer printed materials in networking technologies (IP com, network security, storage), and Cisco® certification. These materials will be added into the Virtual gifts and other offers on the site to enhance the training and education of our members.

Our network was built to provide value and in so doing, we are adding value across the board for all.

There are some limitations in geographic locations for the recipients and we are working on these issues to ensure that everyone can and will benefit from what is being offered.

We thank you for your support as we build on this network and its resources.

Good day to you,

In an effort to enhance the features and values of our network, we have added the Virtual Gifts, Prizes and Solutions as additional resources for our members. As the name says, virtual gifts are categorized in various groups and since we’re extra special and love to provide valuable resources for our members, we enhanced the virtual gifts of our network to include physical products you can use in your PCs.

Yes, that’s right, real gifts from our virtual network such as:

Security products and solutions (anti-virus, anti-malware, firewalls and more)

Applications (business, productivity, system management, utilities)

Mobile Device Apps (business, productivity, system management, utilities)

Microsoft Operating Systems (Vista, Windows 7, XP)

Free Health Assessments/Consultations

Mobile Devices

Hardware products

And more as we continue to build on these offerings.

Some gifts will be location specific so please be sure to look carefully when choosing your gifts. Some gifts are free and for fun and entertainment.

This is just the beginning as we continue to find ways to getting the value and benefits of being an active member of this network while gaining from the knowledge and resources of our training, education and development.

Good day to you,

Effective today, June 1st 2009, we will begin using our social network’s blogs board for the organizations main blogging. We will still maintain the http://titssn.net/blogs site for critical and important organization news, happenings and security alerts. Due to the integration of additional features and resources within the social network, using them will be very beneficial for us as we will now be able to better manage the integration of these features in one central location. You can view the blogs on the social network here http://titssn.org/browse_blogs.php.

We will be moving the main organization forum posts from our old board at http://theitsecuritysuite.net/forum/phpBB2 to the social network starting today. The main organization posts will now be copied into the social network until we phase out the old site.

All referencing links from our main websites, blogs and other areas will now point to the social network. This is in an effort to work within the social network and its resources as our new home.

We will also be removing some of the sub groups on LinkedIn and referencing them from our main group located here http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=44598. This will help to share the info of our network resources while still maintaining a strong presence on LinkedIn. A list of the affected groups will be posted shortly. The groups’ functionality within the social network will give us the same feature and resources and more for us to collaborate more effectively.

We are very happy and excited about our new home and social network and this month will be the major kickoff for populating it with some great content, resources and info.

Join us so the values and benefits can be had.

Greetings,

I am working on my monthly online webcast for April about the Web 2.0 infrastructure in preparation for the upcoming v.3.0. The drastic growth of the Web 2.0 infrastructure caught many people off guard as they jumped into it not knowing what was involved and the issues associated with it. It also created many new threat vectors many of which are still not under control today as the increase of threats/attacks specifically targeting this infrastructure is growing as rapidly as the number of people using it.

The recent Conficker issues have delayed my presentation for this month as I had to be helping out in various organizations to deal with it and so I will be doing it on the 27th.

This presentation will address the present state of the Web 2.0 infrastructure, features, privacy (yes or no), pros, cons and the security concerns associated with it. It will also provide guidance on how to stay private and secure while maximizing the full potentials of the features and capabilities of it. More importantly, I will address the upcoming Web 3.0 realm and why resistance is futile and how can and will you be secured within its realm. Lots of good stuff so please mark this on your calendars and the meeting info will be posted soon.

My May session will be on the Breach Notification Laws and I will have a legal expert joining as a co-host to address this in more legal terms. More details will be provided soon.

This is just one of the ways in which TITSSN and the IT Security Attaché are trying to enhance the education and awareness of these technology/security issues to the general public. All are invited to join.

Thank you very much and have a great day. We apprecilove your business and support and look forward to serving you more.

I received confirmation on Monday that he will not be able to attend, oh no. I had reached out to Mr. Sutherland for him to be our special guest speaker at our annual Mobility/Endpoint Security Summit ~MESS~ 2009 and unfortunately, his production schedule with 24 will not permit him to be with us. However, I did extend the opportunity for a future event (not going to say yet) that will be coming up soon so we’re still hoping to have him with us. His role in 24 adds much to the value of what we do as an IT Security organization as it showcases some of the ways in which security can be compromised, and how taking or not taking the appropriate steps to stop, mitigate and control a situation can lead to serious issues for everyone.

I was really looking forward to meeting and working with him but I haven’t given up yet.

I am working on having another guest speaker from the entertainment business who also plays a strong role in some high tech movies.

Care to think of who it is?

Have a great day,

Hey guys,

So we (Brett, Security Attaché and TITSSN) are off to I-CON for a full weekend of activities, panel discussions, workshops and presentations and we are very excited about it. We will try to keep the blogs/tweets updated. One of the highlights for us is to meet Sam from Lord of the Rings as he’s one of our favorite characters and it is one of our most loved movies. Sean “Samwaise Gamgee” Astin is a special guest at the event this year. I can’t believe it was so long ago, LOTR sits in my head as if I just watched it. Wow, time does go by huh.

Sam from Lord of the Rings

Sam from Lord of the Rings

There will be a showing of all three LOTR movies at the convention so you know we’re going to be all over that.

God I love the LOTR movies.

God I love the LOTR movies.

So anyway, we will have limited access to email and voice but will respond if/when we can. If any readers of the blogs are at the event please reach out and say hi. We’d love to meet you too.

I just got an alert of a thunderstorm for the area so my travel time is now increased. Got to get going to get there in time for the Cyber-Crime panel discussion at the Marriot at 8:30pm.

Thank you and have a great day,

Good day to you,

Over the past year I have been looking for a service that would allow us to create a centralized alerting system for critical security related news, alerts, notices and inter-network happenings (meetings, events, workshops). I have been studying the Twitter network and its growth, usability and service capabilities and I must say that I am very impressed by its sheer simplicity but extensive use and features. As the fastest growing social network today, Twitter allows the ease of signing up, connecting to other Twitter members, activating the SMS device notifications and the use of short text based updates.

This presents a number of possibilities that we can use to build a global alerting system that will aggregate all the various places where threat notification and alerts are being disseminated and channel them into our own system through Twitter. As a network of professionals, business executives and people of influence with high responsibility for critical infrastructures, we need a system that will allow the instant option of opting in and out of alerts and activating the mobile alerting system. It also needs to allow two way communications between the system and those who subscribe to it so in the event of something critical happening, we can have up-to-the-minute updates coming on from anyone anywhere.

For these reasons we have decided to use the Twitter network as our alerting and notification system for IT Security related outbreaks, threats and notices. It will also serve as a notification system for our events, meetings and happenings. Two separate accounts have been created to manage these alerts/notices.

Effective April 1st 2009, TITSSN’s ITSecureAlerts and TITSSNHappening have been activated as a part of the TITSSN v.2010 network upgrade.

Over the past few days we have experienced a heightened sense of alert and awareness from the Conficker worm and its pending effects on the target date of April 1st. There was such a need for pertinent development info and updates as the target day drew nearer, and even on the day that people were reaching out for any kind of heads up they could get, they were coming in from all over. Now we’re able to capture these and have them sent out in a prudent managed fashion. All future alerts and updates on such issues will be handled by the IT Security Alerts (ITSecureAlerts) notification system which will monitor the development and progress of these kinds of threats and post pertinent info for its followers.

TITSSNHappening will broadcast our event updates and happenings and will always maintain the current info for whatever is coming next from the network.

Please follow accordingly and help to spread the word to anyone who wants to be kept in the know in the event of such critical IT Security issues. We may not always have the luxury of time on our hands but we can have the luxury of a working system of alerts and collaboration in times of need.

Thank you very much and have a great day. We apprecilove your business and support and look forward to serving you more.

Good day to you,

It’s that time of the year again and I-CON is here in all its glory, fan filled excitement and awesomeness. TITSSN endorses the I-CON Science and Technology Conference which is in its 28th year, and attracting over 6000 fans from across the country by supporting its need for getting the needed contents and information out to its attendees. This year’s event will be hosted at the campus of Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood Long Island and TITSSN will be there in full swing to address the IT Security Threats Landscape in various panel discussions, workshops and open sessions. Mr. David Carlos, CEO of David Carlos Managed Information Architects and I, the IT Security Attaché, will be representing TITSSN and covering topics such as:

Cyber-Crime (Fri, Marriott, 8:30pm)

How the world of Cyber-Criminals operate – the botnets, the spam, the hackers, etc. Motivations, methods, tools (try to avoid actually teaching people to be cyber-criminals).

Military Technology (Fri, SCCC, 10pm)

General discussion of new developments in offense and defense for the military.  Ray guns, unmanned aircraft, robots, nanotech, psychological warfare, medical advances – and when some of these (more benign) things may be seen outside the military environment

Things That Make You Paranoid (Sat, Marriott, 11:30) Last year, this apparently started off with about 10 minutes of doomsday events and quickly morphed into privacy and security panel.  Description from last year: Protecting yourself in an increasing hostile technological environment. Why the OS sometimes doesn’t matter, new attack vectors (e.g. cell phones), other things to make you paranoid.

Privacy and Security (Sat, SCCC, 12:00)

Maintaining your privacy and the security of your personal information when everything is online.  Implications of Obama’s plans for electronic medical records.  The penalties and how they are and ARE NOT enforced for various violations.  The pros and cons of sharing/storing your medical and other information with services like Google Health.  Should you mind targeted marketing based on data web sites and loyalty programs generate?

The Security Illusion (Sat, SCCC, 5pm) How technology is used to provide a perception of security from terrorism and the technologies that exist that COULD ACTUALLY DO IT.

Supercomputing (Sat, SCCC, 6pm)

Overview and discussion of the various methods of building a supercomputer and how they work.

Security 101 (Sat, SCCC, 6pm) Conficker and the new world of security threats. Addressing today’s IT Security Threats Landscape and its effects on people

Will HAL Dream? (Sat, SCCC, 21:00)

General discussion of artificial intelligence – from SkyNet (Terminator) to the HAL9000 to Data (from Star Trek) – how close are we, will it take over the world, and how to stop it if it tries to.

Security 102 (Sun, SCCC, 1:30pm) Your biggest security concerns. Are they valid or just myths? Protecting your computers and network from those concerns.

NASA Today (Sun, SCCC, 14:00)

Discussion of NASA’s current publicly known goals, how they should be changed, improved, or re-prioritized.

Global Warming Myths and Facts (Sun, Marriott, 4pm) Discussion of global warming myths, facts, and (potentially) debate.

Discussion could include perspectives that global warming is not happening and/or is actually progressing in a potentially “natural” way that would happen even without human activity.

This is a fun filled and educational event for the entire family and those who are serious games, anime, sci-fi, mystery and the works addicts. Different sessions, workshops, films, and activities take you through the day and into the early hours of the morning.

TITSSN would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Lee Wilbur, Director of Information Technology and Science and Technology Track Leader at I-CON and member of TITSSN for this opportunity to be a part of the event and accepting our contributions to it. We will continue to work with him and endorse the event in any way we can. Next year we will try to have more people representing the organization to help cover more IT/technology sessions.

For those who will be at CON, see you there.

More info about I-CON can be found on their website here http://iconsf.org.

Thank you very much and have a great day. We apprecilove your business and support and look forward to serving you more.

I got a new shipment of Windows 7 discs today from Microsoft for our hands-on workshops. Our next workshop is coming up soon and I will be giving them away. As a matter of fact, i’ll have some at the next group meeting on April 9th as well.

Early adopters can get a quick look at it.

Hey guys,

Phil Lipkowitz, Director Channel Sales, Systems Business, North America for Microsemi Corporation, PowerDsine Systems accepted my invite to present to us on May 14th 2009.

I just got the final word from Mr. Lipkowitz that they will be with us for our group meeting at Microsoft’s Briefing Center in NYC.

Microsemi’s Company Profile

http://www.microsemi.com/powerdsine/

Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC) is a semiconductor manufacturer specializing in system-engineered integrated circuits and high reliability semiconductors to support its steady growth and profitability.

A long-time supplier of high-reliability discrete components to military and aerospace customers, Microsemi has transformed itself into a global supplier of high performance analog, mixed-signal integrated circuits and high reliability discrete semiconductors that manage and regulate power, protect against transient voltage spikes, and transmit, receive and amplify electronic signals.

Microsemi serves premier companies in six broad markets: mobile/ connectivity, notebooks/ LCD TV/ display, medical, defense, and commercial air/space.

By working closely with other key suppliers as well as our customers ’ development teams, Microsemi is able to identify unique ways to influence future designs – beyond the scope of simple product enhancements. The resulting “system-engineered” solutions create must-have products with competitive barriers and higher margins.

Microsemi has established itself in a leadership position for managing power that lights color displays in automotive GPS systems, notebook computers, computer monitors and LCD TVs. It provides DC-DC solutions for the HDD and set top box markets. Its extensive product offering has enabled it to penetrate numerous end markets that have diversified the company revenues.

The company’s RF product offering is extensive ranging from WLAN power ampliers for a rapidly growing consumer market to high power PIN diodes for an evolving medical MRI market to bipolar transistors for radar and avionics applications.

Microsemi’s product offering of high power switching products has also differentiated itself by addressing strengthening solar inverter, medical, SMPS, and other industrial applications.

Research and development investment for Microsemi’s high margin growth market products is essential to continue driving growth from its core markets.

Incorporated in 1960, Microsemi has established a consistent history of profitable operation.

Hey guys,

I just got final confirmation from Mr. Evan Fromberg, Director of Sales, Channel Partners at Fortinet, that they will be presenting their new FortiOS version 4 to us at our local group meeting in NYC on April 9th at 6pm. He and his engineer will be there to present the OS and answer our technical questions. Sweet, i’m excited.

FortiOS provides the foundation for the operation of all FortiGate appliances, from the core kernel functions to the security processing feature sets. FortiOS provides multiple layers of security for a variety of applications and content including Web, Email, FTP, IM/P2P, NNTP, and others. The main security features of FortiOS include Firewall, Virtual Private Networking (IPsec and SSL VPN), Antivirus, Intrusion Prevention, Web filtering, and Antispam.

With the release of FortiOS 4.0, Fortinet has redefined network security again by extending the scope of consolidated security and networking capabilities within FortiGate® multi-threat network security platforms. With over 40 new features, FortiOS 4.0 delivers on its mission to enable secure business communications while offering the best security, performance, and total cost of ownership possible.

New in FortiOS 4.0

WAN Optimization
WAN optimization provides acceleration for applications traversing slower network connections – which are typically WANs. The combination of multi-threat security, traffic optimization, and VPN technologies provides cleaned, accelerated, and secured communications.

Application Control
Application control uses our dynamic application identification engine that recognizes applications based on their behavior. By coupling application control policies with sophisticated security features, administrators can achieve comprehensive protection with granular and more meaningful policies.

Data Leakage Prevention (DLP)
DLP uses a sophisticated pattern-matching and regular-expression engine to identify then prevent the communication of sensitive information outside of the network perimeter. In addition, DLP technology also provides audit trails for data and files, which can aid in legislative compliance.

SSL Inspection
SSL inspection ensures protection from malware infection that is camouflaged by secured protocols, allowing the FortiGate to decrypt the data passing through the SSL-encrypted connection. Once decrypted, the data can be passed to FortiOS security engines for inspection.

More info on the new OS here http://www.fortinet.com/products/fortios/.

Registration is open here http://www.clicktoattend.com/invitation.aspx?code=137146 and the meeting page will be available with details shortly.

Many thanks to Mr. Fromberg for accepting my invite/request and I look forward to the meeting.
